Solina String Ensemble For Kontakt 4 & 5
The Solina String Ensemble was first manufactured in 1974, originally by Dutch company Eminent and later, under licence by ARP. It was an immediate success across a wide spectrum of music, with users including Stevie Wonder, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Elton John, Parliament, Air, Tangerine Dream and The Cure.
The instrument that we have sampled, is a Mark II version which has the capability to switch the modulation off. This is important for sampling, because even if the phase of the modulation is identical on all the samples, as soon as two or more notes are triggered at different times, the modulation becomes out of sync. We have sampled every note of each voice (Violin, Viola, Horn, Trumpet, Cello and Contrabass), with and without modulation, and all of the modulated voices have three round-robins per note. For patches using the non-modulated samples, we have used a combination of Kontakt LFOs and chorus, to match the original instrument’s chorus as closely as possible. Another possibility is to turn the modulation off completely and use a plug-in, for a more contemporary ensemble sound. In theory, using the round-robin samples is best for single voice lines, and the recreated modulation for chords, but the choice is yours.
Producer Ed Buller, (Suede, Pulp, Spiritualised): Truly wonderful samples. Can't stop playing it ......putting it on the new Suede album right now!

×On the Tweak page, there are options to further match the behaviour of the original instrument's voice control. The Contrabass and Cello can be made monophonic and have a fixed envelope, and the brass voices can have a fixed attack. "Kill Release On New" makes it possible to set a long release time, but when a new non-legato note is played, the original notes are ended. (Sound and Vision by David Bowie is a great example of how this works.)
